Plein Air and Sketchbooks

Paintings done outdoors are usually done fast and loose. Sometimes I will sketch quickly in a journal to capture something about a moment. For these I like to use watercolor combined with gouache or line work in marker. At times I will paint plein air as long as I can before the light changes and create a more finished painting. Often, I will take a photo of a scene to finish a sketch back in my studio and use these photos and sketches as reference for larger works.
